Indianapolis Colts running back Vick Ballard will miss the remainder of the season with a knee injury suffered in practice Thursday, Sept. 12, according to a report by ESPN's Adam Schefter and Mike Wells.
Head coach Chuck Pagano said Ballard will be placed on injured reserve with a torn ACL, and the team will sign running back Kerwynn Williams off its practice squad.
Ballard, 23, had assumed the role of the team's starting back after a breakout rookie season in 2012 in which he started 12 times, averaging 3.9 yards per carry.
Against the Oakland Raiders on Sunday, Sept. 8, Ballard carried 13 times for 63 yards.
Ballard's injury was described by Pagano as "non-contact," and happened when attempting to make a cut move off his right knee on the practice field.
The team signed free agent running back Ahmad Bradshaw on June 11, who figures to now receive more carries than possibly expected, as offensive coordinator Pep Hamilton had spoken Thursday of the want to split carries between Bradshaw and Ballard closer to 50-50.
Ballard appeared on the team's Thursday practice report as being limited after not appearing Wednesday.
Donald Brown also appears primed to now receive more carries, after not having one against the Raiders. Brown has 15 career starts as he enters his fifth-year with the Colts.
