Continuing to rearrange its roster prior to the regular season opener, the Indianapolis Colts traded for a linebacker and signed a wide receiver Monday, Sept. 2.
In an exchange with the San Francisco 49ers, the Colts acquired linebacker Cam Johnson. A seventh-round draft selection was sent back in return, according to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network.
Johnson, 23, was the San Francisco 49ers seventh-round selection in the 2012 NFL Draft out of the University of Virginia. He appeared in two games last season in weeks 16 and 17 for the reigning NFC Champions.
During the 2013 preseason, Johnson made eight tackles, including six in the 49ers' preseason finale against the San Diego Chargers on Thursday, Aug. 29.
The acquisition of Johnson gives the team 10 linebackers on its current roster, but no corresponding move has been announced by the Colts as of this writing to make room for him on the 53-man roster.
UPDATE (5:26 p.m. EST): The team has announced it was has waived tight end Justice Cunningham to make room for Johnson.
The team also announced the signing of wide receiver DaRick Rogers to be the seventh member of the practice squad Monday.
Rogers was waived by the Buffalo Bills on Aug. 26, after being signed as an undrafted free agent in April. He attended both the University of Tennessee and the Tennessee Tech University.
The Colts waived wide receiver Nathan Palmer from the team's injured reserve list under conditions of an injury settlement
