Lefeged, 25, reportedly fled the scene of a traffic stop with another passenger in a vehicle before eventually being stopped and arrested. A police search of the vehicle also found an unregistered firearm.
Both Lefeged and his passenger are facing multiple charges, including carrying a firearm without a license, possession of an unregistered firearm and possession of unregistered ammunition.
After being undrafted out of Rutgers University in 2011, Lefeged signed with the Colts prior to training camp and has appeared in all 32 games of his NFL career, primarily as a special teams player, but does have five starts at safety.
This is the second gun related incident involving a NFL player this week, following the arrest of former New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez on Wednesday, June 26.
UPDATE: Shortly before 4 p.m., the Indianapolis Colts released a statement on the arrest of Joe Lefeged:
"We are aware of the reports regarding Joe Lefeged in Washington, D.C. At this time, we will have no further comment on the pending matter until we gain more information."
Colts 101 will further update this story when information becomes available.Tags: Football, Indianapolis, Indianapolis Colts, NFL
