The Green Bay Packers (4-2) received some better news regarding tight end Jermichael Finley on Tuesday. According to ESPN's Ed Werder, Finley has been told by doctors he should be released from the hospital within the next 24 hours.
Finley reportedly has been diagnosed with a bruised spinal cord in his neck after Cleveland Browns safety Tashaun Gipson hit his shoulder into Finley's helmet on Sunday. Finley was carted off of the field on a stretcher after the unfortunate and incidental contact near Finley's head.
Packers head coach Mike McCarthy said Monday he felt there was nothing dirty about the hit, saying it was just "one of those situations where it just went that way". McCarthy said there is no timetable for Finley's return, but Werder has reported he will likely miss 4-6 weeks.
According to Werder, Finley will not need surgery and doctors do believe he could play at some point this season if he chooses to do so.
Finley tweeted on Monday night that he was transferred out of the intensive care unit and he had regained full feeling in his arms and legs. Finley also said he was able to walk to and from the shower and thanked his followers and the fans for their love and support.
Despite the good news, the Packers' official injury report doesn't come out until Wednesday and there is a chance the team could place Finley on the Injured-Reserve (IR) list. Finley suffered a concussion in a week three loss against the Cincinnati Bengals and for Finley's personal sake, it may be smart to call it a season.
If the Packers choose to place Finley on the IR, his season would be over, as the Packers have used the IR/designation to return slot on wide receiver Randall Cobb. Cobb broke his fibula in the Packers' week six win over the Baltimore Ravens and he can return to the field no earlier than week 15.
Green Bay can also activate offensive tackle Derek Sherrod, defensive tackle Jerel Worthy, safety Sean Richardson and offensive lineman J.C. Tretter off of the Physically-Unable-to-Perform List this week as well, making it all the more likely that the Packers will place Finley on the IR.
