The Green Bay Packers (4-2) won their third consecutive game on Sunday, but suffered another tremendous loss due to injury.
In the Packers 31-13 win over the Cleveland Browns (3-4), tight end Jermichael Finley suffered a neck injury after Browns safety Tashaun Gipson led with his shoulder into Finley's helmet late in Sunday's game.
"I don't know what you can do, it seemed like one of those situations where it just went that way," Packers head coach Mike McCarthy said on Monday. "He was going to the ground, the timing and angle of the hit, it was two guys playing football. I don't know what any of the players involved could have done differently, really."
Finley was carted off of the field on a stretcher and he was reportedly stabilized in the intensive care unit at a local hospital. Finley though has been reportedly walking around and gaining movement in nearly all parts of his body.
"As far as the injury, there are a lot of opinions to be heard," McCarthy said. "A timeline is premature to comment on that today. He (Finley) is in good spirits, he is very upbeat, very positive. He's focused on what's most important."
"We do not have enough information. This is something that needs to be seen by more than one doctor," McCarthy said. "I think it's important to go through the process and we will do what is at best interest for Jermichael Finley."
Finley was asked to step into more of a receiving role due to numerous injuries in the Packers' wide receiver core. On Sunday, Finley caught five passes for 72 yards and scored one touchdown before suffering a neck injury.
Packers wide receiver James Jones (knee) was ruled out on Sunday and he could return to the field within the next couple of weeks, according to McCarthy.
Offensive weapon Randall Cobb broke his fibula in the first half of the Packers 19-17 win over the Baltimore Ravens in week six and he will sit be out until Week 15.
Finley will likely be out for awhile, according to McCarthy. In a week three loss against the Cincinnati Bengals, Finley suffered a concussion on the Packers' first offensive drive of the game.
On the year, Finley has caught 25 passes for 300 yards and he has scored three touchdowns. In the wake of Finley's injury, the Packers will likely rotate Andrew Quarless, Brandon Bostick and rookie Jake Stoneburner at tight end.
Quarless, Bostick, Stoneburner and injured tight end Ryan Taylor have totaled six catches for 39 yards this season. "We have three good tight ends," McCarthy said. "It's important to define roles for those guys. It's important to stay focused."
The Packers are currently progressing through the 2013 season with the mantra to "Keep Calm and Carry On," a mantra which is more important now than ever in Green Bay after losing another key player.
"It's a challenge we accept," McCarthy said. "It is a challenge everyone in our league goes through. Hopefully, it'll come to an end."
