The Green Bay Packers (2-2) placed linebacker Robert Francois on the season-ending injured-reserve (IR) list on Monday and promoted cornerback James Nixon from the practice squad to the 53-man roster, according to Packers General Manager Ted Thompson.
Francois tore his achilles tendon in Sunday's win over the Detroit Lions in place of Brad Jones, who suffered a hamstring injury against the Lions. Francois recorded two tackles this season while primarily starring on special teams.
The Packers injury problems in the linebacker core though is a continuous list after Sunday, as All-Pro outside linebacker Clay Matthews fractured his thumb. ESPN's Adam Schefter reported Monday that Matthews is expected to be out for one month, but the Packers haven't confirmed anything yet regarding their star defender.
Packers head coach Mike McCarthy said earlier on Monday the Packers hadn't received all of the medical information regarding Matthews' thumb and are unsure if he will need surgery on it. McCarthy said Matthews fractured his thumb after sacking Lions' quarterback Matt Stafford in the third quarter of Sunday's game.
In other injury news, Packers linebackers Brad Jones suffered a hamstring injury in the win over the Lions on Sunday and his status for next Sunday against the Baltimore Ravens is unknown. Jones is the Packers second-leading tackler this season with 29 total and has also registered two tackles for loss and forced one fumble.
The Packers have had numerous players suffer hamstring injuries this season and with the 2013 seasonal injury history, Jones will likely be out for an extended period of time recovering from it.
Nixon has been on the Packers' practice squad since Week 3 of the 2012 regular season. The second-year player out of California University (Pa.) was signed to replace Francois on the 53-man roster and nearly made the final cut at the end of training camp in late August. With Nixon, the Packers now have seven cornerbacks on the 53-man roster.
There is a possibility Matthews and/or Jones could be placed on the IR by Tuesday, but the Packers' haven't ruled anything out quite yet. We'll have more information regarding injury news on Jones, Matthews and the Packers throughout the week.
