Green Bay Packers (0-1) safety Morgan Burnett has been ruled out of Sunday's home opener against the Washington Redskins (0-1), according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. Burnett is still healing from a hamstring injury which has bothered the fourth-year safety since the tail-end of training camp in August. Packers head coach Mike McCarthy called Burnett the "quarterback of the defense" earlier this week, and his loss will certainly not help the Packers chances of avoiding an 0-2 start to the regular season.
Burnett led the Packers with 123 total tackles in 2012 and he also recorded two interceptions and two sacks. Since missing all but four games during his rookie season, Burnett had not missed a start from 2011-2012. Burnett though will miss his second consecutive game of the 2013 regular season.
Jerron McMillian, M.D. Jennings, and Chris Banjo will rotate at safety for the Packers against the Redskins. Last week in the team's season opener at San Francisco, 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick compiled a career-high 412 passing yards against the Packers Burnett-less defensive secondary. McCarthy said earlier this week the Packers would be ready for "whatever direction" they decide to go at safety against Washington.
McMillian and Jenning were horrendous against the 49ers, as veteran wide receiver Anquan Boldin and tight end Vernon Davis combined to catch 19 passes for 306 yards and scored three touchdowns. The Packers defensive secondary lacked any kind of communication against the 49ers, as Kaepernick and the San Francisco offense took full advantage of the Packers serious secondary flaws in the season opener.
Other inactives for the Packers on Sunday includes cornerback Casey Hayward (hamstring), cornerback Jarrett Bush (hamstring), linebacker Nate Palmer, offensive guard Lane Taylor, defensive end Josh Boyd, and defensive end C.J. Wilson. Offensive guard Josh Sitton (back) and tight end Jermichael Finley (toe) were both activated for Sunday's game against the Redskins. Kickoff is at noon CST from Lambeau Field.
