The Green Bay Packers signed veteran quarterback Seneca Wallace and released 2nd-year quarterback B.J. Coleman on Monday morning, according to the Packers official team website. The Packers kept Coleman on the team’s 53-man roster on Saturday in favor of veteran Vince Young and former Packer Graham Harrell. Wallace should provide some short-term stability as Aaron Rodgers’ backup quarterback.
“We had an opportunity over the weekend to evaluate him”, Packers head coach Mike McCarthy said after practice on Monday. “I believe he is a good fit for our room, and I’m glad he is here”.
An experienced veteran, Wallace will be entering his 11th NFL season. Similar to Young, Wallace is two years removed from NFL regular season game action, as he last played for the Cleveland Browns in 2011. The undersized Wallace (5’11, 203) was with the Browns, New Orleans Saints, and San Francisco 49ers during the 2012 preseason.
“He has been in the league for awhile”, McCarthy said. “He understands his role, he has been in a lot of systems, and I’m confident he will be ready for Sunday”.
Unlike Young, Wallace did not participate in the 2013 preseason, as Packers General Manager Ted Thompson said Sunday “I probably should’ve brought (Young) in earlier” to training camp—an indication that Young was unable to pick up the entire Packers offensive system in less than a month of work.
McCarthy said Wallace shouldn’t have any problems getting up to speed with Green Bay’s system. “I think he clearly has a lot of experience in our offense, especially after being in Seattle and Cleveland”, McCarthy said. “The way they approached the no-huddle, there are a lot of comparisons, and he has a lot of experience—period”.
Since the Seattle Seahawks selected him in the 4th round of the 2003 NFL Draft out of Iowa State, Wallace has started 21 of 62 career games played. Wallace has completed 59.2% of his passes for 4,808 yards, and has thrown 31 touchdowns and 18 interceptions. A dual-threat option throughout his entire football career, Wallace has averaged 4.3 yards/carry for 293 career rushing yards, and has scored one touchdown on the ground.
Starting quarterback Rodgers barely played in the preseason, completing 17/24 passes for 237 yards in roughly one-half of football. Wide receivers Jordy Nelson (knee) and Randall Cobb (biceps) were both injured during the majority of training camp, and did not record a catch in one exhibition game.
Despite the lack of playing time for the Packers’ top offensive weapons, McCarthy isn’t worried heading into San Francisco. “I feel good about where we are offensively”, McCarthy said. “We’ve had some time to work. There is a little unknown, but I feel good where we are”.
The Packers also signed wide receivers Charles Johnson and Myles White, tight end Jake Stoneburner, cornerback James Nixon, offensive linemen Bryan Collins and Aaron Adams, running back Michael Hill, and quarterback Scott Tolzien to the team’s practice squad.
Tolzien, a former undrafted rookie from the University of Wisconsin, has been with the San Francisco 49ers the past two seasons. “I think he is an excellent fit for us”, McCarthy said. “His preseason tape the last two years was impressive, and we are excited and feel fortunate he is here”.
McCarthy and Thompson said throughout training camp they “liked Coleman’s progress”, and McCarthy said he believes Coleman still “has a future in front of him” in the NFL.
