Vince Young, Alex Green, and D.J Williams Among Notable Roster Cuts; Johnny Jolly Survives

The NFL 53-man deadline has come and gone, as the Green Bay Packers released notable players such as quarterback Vince Young, tight end D.J. Williams, running back Alex Green, and wide receiver Charles Johnson on Saturday. Notable survivors at the final cut deadline includes defensive tackle Johnny Jolly, defensive lineman Josh Boyd, outside linebacker Andy Mulumba, offensive lineman Lane Taylor, linebacker Sam Barrington, and safety Chris Banjo.

Young, a former two-time Pro Bowl quarterback with the Tennessee Titans, hasn't played in an NFL regular season game since 2011. The Packers signed Young on August 5th, one year after participating in Buffalo Bills training camp.

Williams, the former Mackey Award Winner at the University of Arkansas, has caught nine passes for 70 yards in two NFL seasons. Williams' release is surprising to us here at Packers 101, as his versatility out of the offensive backfield and ability as an off-set tight end were intriguing assets to have on the Packers offense.

Green led the Packers in rushing last season with 464 yards. Since the Packers selected him in the third round of the 2011 NFL Draft, Green has really never panned out as a running back for the Packers. Between Green and running back James Starks, we here at Packers 101 felt Packers head coach Mike McCarthy and General Manager Ted Thompson made the right call at running back.

Johnson, one of the team's 7th-round picks in the 2013 NFL Draft, was injured throughout training camp. Johnson was targeted on three passes in the team's preseason finale in Kansas City, but he did not catch a pass. If he isn't claimed by another NFL team, Johnson will return to Green Bay as a member of the team's practice squad.
