Green Bay Packer CEO Mark Murphy told shareholders that he no longer backs an 18 game NFL season. Mark Murphy would like to see a 16 game regular season with two pre season games to start each year.
Mr. Murphy knows that there would be those who would have concerns with this type of schedule. The first concern would be the amount of money each team would not make during the two games that are now played during the pre season. A second concern would be the time each coaching staff would be reduced to during a shortened pre season. During the present schedule the coaching staffs have their practice and evaluation times set, so they can select the best players for their styles of offense and defense. The reduced pre season would also hurt a new coaching staff trying to put in different systems then the players had during their last season together.
The owners are aware that they need to review the current schedule so they can help keep the players healthy while still giving the fans the game they love. Mark Murphy is aware that he has changed his stance on the schedule change since the owners and players worked out their collective agreement. This is the correct time to change scheduling views and ideas since no new system has been put into place and the changes can still be discussed.
Mark Murphy discussed his views at the stockholders meeting at Lambeau Field. This meeting was attended by some 12,500 Green Bay Packer Stockholders. The small crowd was a surprise since the Green Bay Packers had just sold over 250,000 new shares during the off season.
