The PGA Tour announced today that Tiger Woods has been named Player of the Year for 2013. It was the 11th time Woods has won the award and the third time he has won it without winning a Major Championship.
Tiger Woods five wins on tour this year, combined with his dominating victory at the Players Championship back in May likely were too much to overcome for the other contenders for this award. Many thought that Adam Scott's overall year with winning the Green Jacket at Augusta, or Phil Mickelson's three world wide wins including his surprising come from behind win at The Open Championship would be enough for them to win. Even FedEx Cup Champ Henrik Stenson had entered into the conversation.
In the end, Tiger's win at TPC Sawgrass was likely the difference maker. All of his other victories this year have come on courses and in events that he's won over 50% of the time he's played in them. As Tiger himself stated when asked about that:
"There are certain golf courses that I've done well at over the course of my career," Woods said Friday. "No matter how I was playing coming in, whether it was good or bad, I always felt like I was going to have a good week — Torrey being one, Doral, Augusta and Firestone and Bay Hill."
That Tiger Woods is this year's Player of the Year on the PGA Tour wouldn't have been a surprise had someone been predicting it back in January. What would have been a surprise would have been had anyone projected Jordan Spieth as this year's PGA Tour Rookie of the Year. No one saw that coming until about the middle part of the summer.

Spieth began the year with no PGA Tour Status. Using Sponsor exemptions gained through his endorsement deal with Under Armour, Spieth garnered his first three top 10 finishes in March and April. He then became the fourth youngest winner on tour ever and the first teenager to win since 1931 when he won a thrilling playoff at the John Deere Classic in July. He followed that with a runner up finish at the Wyndham Championship last month and then a top ten finish at the Deutsche Bank Championship earlier this month.
That led to his selection to the President's Cup team by Fred Couples, the youngest player ever to be a member of that team. Spieth wound up the year seventh in the FedEx Cup rankings making the PGA Tour's selection for the Rookie of the Year even easier than Fred Couples decision was. There was no one else it could be.
