The Classic rock jazz fusion band "Steely Dan" once said in a song long ago that "they've got a name for the winners of the world…they call Alabama the Crimson Tide". Nothing was more true for Team USA at the National Golf Links of America as they trounced the contingent from Great Britain and Ireland 17-9 to bring the Walker Cup back to American soil.
Bobby Wyatt, Justin Thomas, and Cory Whitsett, all players for the University of Alabama golf team, combined to win 7 of Team USA's 17 points to lead the way. They were all key contributors to Alabama's charge to the NCAA Championship this past June, and now they've done the same for their country.
Wyatt and Thomas both made quick work in their early afternoon matches, pretty much ensuring that there would be no British Isles comeback. Their coach at Alabama, Jay Seawell, this time there as a spectator, was very emotional at the conclusion of them both. He had to run up the 15th fairway after Thomas had closed his match out to witness Wyatt finish his.
"It was just a wonderful week for everybody involved," said Wyatt, part of Alabama's NCAA championship team. "I got to know some of the Great Britain and Ireland guys that I didn't know. I really enjoyed that, and I'm sure I'll be seeing a lot of them down the road."
This was particularly special to Team USA's Captain Jim Holtgrieve, as he had led the squad both as Captain and player when they lost the Cup to Team Britain-Ireland in 2011 at Royal Aberdeen in Scotland.
"It's something I have been wanting for a long, long time, particularly after we lost in 2011," U.S. captain Jim Holtgrieve said. "I was hoping I would get a mulligan for '13 and when I knew it was going to be at National Golf Links, which is where it all started, I wanted so bad to come here. Yes. I wanted to win, but I wanted to do something good for golf and this, to me, was truly good for golf."
35-Year old Nathan Smith, one of the two mid-amateur's on Holtgrieve's squad clinched the Cup by beating Nathan Kimsey 4-3. The other Mid-Amateur, 45-year old high school teacher Todd White won his match as well. taking out Ryhs Pugh 4-3 later in the afternoon.
Holtgrieve now turns the reins over to the next Walker Cup Captain, John (Spider) Miller as the event returns to the British Isles in two years. The 2015 Walker Cup will be held at Royal Latham and St. Anne's.
