Automatic qualifying for Team USA at the President's Cup will be settled this Labor Day weekend at The Deutsche Bank Championship. The top eight spots are pretty much settled.
There are five players jockeying for those last two guaranteed spots. Webb Simpson currently stands ninth and will need to play well to hold off the other contenders.
Zach Johnson and Steve Stricker currently hold the tenth and eleventh place point rankings and both need to play well to hold on. Johnson skipped The Barclay's this past weekend to attend his brother's wedding while Stricker took the week off as well to nurse a strained hamstring.
Finally Dustin Johnson and Jim Furyk are both within striking distance and could jump into the top ten with strong performances in Boston.
Dustin Johnson probably will be strongly considered as a Captain's pick by Team USA captain Fred Couples even if he doesn't overtake Simpson and Zach Johnson. But Stricker and Furyk, despite their deep experience in past Ryder and President's Cup may be long shots. They both played poorly at last year's Ryder Cup. That will be something Couples will have to consider when making his picks next Wednesday.
With a top five finish this weekend, Bubba Watson could get into the mix for an automatic berth. It's highly unlikely anyone behind him could make a charge.
Other potential Captain's picks will try to impress Couples while they also try to move up the board in the FedEx Cup race. Rickie Fowler may be a favorite among those as he played very well in the 2010 Ryder Cup. Others who could draw Couples eye are Billy Horschel, Kevin Streelman, and Nick Watney. But don't count out 20-year- old rookie sensation Jordan Spieth. Despite his age, he shows the kind of grit and nerves of steel that are required for Cup play.
The race for automatic President's Cup berths may wrapping up on Labor Day at TPC Boston, but the FedEx Cup race will be just getting into high gear.
