While this tournament may be a bit anti-climatic after last week's PGA Championship, the final Major of the year, the field includes a host of players on the bubble for qualifying for the FedEx Cup four tournament elimination race that begins at The Barclay's next week.
Marquis names like Padraig Harrington, Peter Hanson, Stuart Appleby, Ben Crane, and Nicolas Colsaerts head a list of competitors who all are either right inside the top 125, or just outside it. They all have their sights on winning here, or finishing in the top 10 to ensure that they play on next week with a shot at the ultimate $10 Million prize that awaits the FedEx Cup winner.
Other top players with Major Championship or PGA Tour winning pedigree that still could sneak inside the top 125 include David Toms, the 2001 PGA Championship winner, whose seventh place finish this past weekend at the PGA Championship vaulted him from 173rd to 145th. Similarly, past Major Champions Trevor Immelman, Y.E. Yang, and Davis Love III could all qualify with Top 10 performances this week.
Sergio Garcia is in the field as the defending champion. Garcia has had a solid 2013 season, despite not winning any titles, and is one of the favorites to contend this weekend. Garcia will have to deal with a field that includes a couple of of players that have won on tour this year, including Boo Weekley and Bill Haas. Also in the field are past major winners Ernie Els and Vijay Singh.
Most of the players ranked in the top 50 in the FedEx Cup standings are skipping this tournament, deciding to take a break to prepare for the playoff series before heading to Jersey City next week.
