With possibly the best core of young players in the league, the Golden State Warriors looked positioned to succeed in this year's Las Vegas Summer League and they did not disappoint. Led by top pick Harrison Barnes, the Warriors made light work of their opponents in Vegas.
Harrison Barnes was one of the steals of the draft as he fell to the Warriors at the #7 pick in this past June's draft. Barnes, along with fellow rookies Festus Ezeli and Draymond Green, joined last year's draftees Klay Thompson and Charles Jenkins on the Warriors summer league squad. Thompson put together an impressive rookie campaign as he was needed to be the main scoring threat on numerous occasions due to injuries to star players. Jenkins also had a solid rookie year, especially considering he was a 2nd round draft pick.
The Warriors started off the summer league with a bang as they dismantled the Los Angeles Lakers 90-50. As a team, the Warriors shot an astonishing 67% from three point range, led by Barnes and Thompson who shot a combined 10-12 from behind the arc. These fantastic forwards almost outscored the Lakers by themselves as Thompson finished with 24 and Barnes with 23.
Game 2 was more of the same as the Warriors continued their red hot shooting from deep, shooting over 60% yet again. The scoring was more balanced as five Warriors players ended up in double figures. This time the team was led in scoring by Jenkins who finished 9-12 for 24 points. Thompson finished 4-6 from three and totaled 17 points.
After the first two blowouts, Klay Thompson was done playing as the team did not want to risk any injuries to its already proven young forward. Barnes led the team in the remaining three games as he averaged 16.8 points and 5.6 rebounds per game for the entirety of the league play.
These young Warriors players will be able to make an instant impact on this upcoming season as they will play important roles on the team. Thompson and Barnes will start along with veterans Stephen Curry, David Lee, and Andrew Bogut. With the veterans experience, and the young guns athleticism and sharpshooting ability, the future is bright in Oakland.
