In many ways, Aaron Ramsey embodies present-day Arsenal. Indubitably talented but frustratingly inconsistent. Capable of producing awe-inspiring moments of football while also having an injury right around the corner.
Some of Arsenal’s pivotal goals in the last decade have been scored by Aaron Ramsey. After spending nine seasons in the trophyless wilderness, it was Ramsey’s first-time shot that won the FA Cup. Three years later, Ramsey would score the winner against Chelsea, giving Wenger his record making seventh FA Cup triumph.
Moments like the thunderbolt against Galatasaray or his winning goal against Manchester United in the 2010-11 season still remain fresh in the fans’ memory. These moments are peppered all across Ramsey’s career, so much so that Arsenal would often look to him to find inspiration.
Arsenal may find it difficult to replace his penchant for brilliance. Unai Emery‘s biggest victory at Arsenal came against Tottenham where Ramsey provided two assists. This proves that he still seems to find magic when it matters.
A Consummate Professional
Even after his agent and Arsenal bungled the contract extension talks, Ramsey has been a committed professional on the pitch. A simple comparison with Alexis Sanchez this time last season would show the value of having a player giving his best, all the while knowing he has no future at the club.
In the past too, an off-colour Ramsey has always been a willing runner, covering every inch of the grass. With players like Mesut Ozil often accused of going missing in big games, Ramsey has never been found wanting for effort.
Ramsey’s athleticism and reading of the game has helped him slot into multiple roles during his time at Arsenal. While the box-to-box midfielder is his best fit, he has played the number ten and right-wing roles to varying degrees of success.
Arsenal may not have a lot of players who can fill multiple positions as well as Ramsey did, especially at the base of midfield.
In all fairness, Ramsey’s injury record would have made any contract extension fraught with conditions. However, it is painful to see indifferent treatment dished out to a true Arsenal legend by the club. Hopefully, Ramsey’s future career is trophy-laden while remaining injury free.
