Can the Detroit Tigers get back into playoff race after series win vs Toronto?

DETROIT – The Detroit Tigers have known for a better part of a month that they need to go on a lengthy win streak to get back into the playoff race.

Although it is probably too late to avoid an inevitable selloff before the July 31 trade deadline, the Tigers showed Sunday there still is fight left in them.

J.D. Martinez delivered a game-tying solo home run off Danny Barnes to lead off the bottom of the eighth inning after Toronto’s bullpen had shut the Tigers down for 3 1/3 innings.

Meanwhile, Detroit’s bullpen sparkled after Anibal Sanchez gave up five runs on nine hits (three home runs) in six innings.

Daniel Stumpf, Alex Wilson, Bruce Rondon, Justin Wilson, Shane Greene and Warwick Saupold combined to allow one hit over five scoreless innings, setting up the Tigers offense in the bottom of the 11th.
