We continue in our somewhat-regular series of Red Wings trade targets by looking at Buffalo Sabres captain Steve Ott.
The possibility of Ott coming to Detroit was brought up by SportsNet's Mark Spector and Brad May.
Current Team: Buffalo Sabres
Cap Hit: $2.95 million
Contract Expires: 2014 (Pending UFA)
Strengths: Stat sheet-stuffing center, provides leadership, brings toughness and grit, wins faceoffs.
Weaknesses: Plus-minus rating (-18) is not good (more of a product of playing on a bad team), not very gifted offensively, has been in NHL's doghouse with three suspensions in his career.
Outlook: If Ken Holland wants to add some toughness to the Wings, Ott could be the answer, as he has more offensive ability than Jordin Tootoo. His leadership could also be key as the Wings try to chase down a playoff spot. Ott can also be a physical presence should the Wings run into a team like Ottawa or Toronto.
Ott is also set to become an unrestricted free agent after this season, so if he works out as a rental player, Holland might have to consider keeping him or letting him walk for nothing.
What it Might Take to Get Him: A prospect (Landon Ferraro) and/or a draft pick.
