Red Wings Update: The Red Wings rolled to a fourth straight win on Thursday, as they handed the Colorado Avalanche their first loss with a 4-2 victory, and tying the Toronto Maple LEafs for first place in the Atlantic Division. Johan Franzen and Pavel Datsyuk each scored two goals, while Jonas Gustavsson stopped 38 shots for his third straight win. Datsyuk (10 points–4 goals, 6 assists) and Henrik Zetterberg (10 points–6 goals, 4 assists) lead the team in scoring (to no one's surprise). The Wings will be without Niklas Kronwall (concussion), Darren Helm (groin), and Patrick Eaves (knee).
Coyotes Update: The Coyotes have been steady at fourth place in the Pacific Division. They were able to salvage a point in a 3-2 shootout loss to the Anaheim Ducks. Antoine Vermette and Rostislav Klesla scored, and Smith stopped 37 shots. Martin Hanzal (7 points–1 goal, 6 assists) and Radim Vrbata (6 points–4 goals, 2 assists) lead the team in scoring.
What to Watch For:
Howie's Back: Jimmy Howard returns to the net for the Wings tonight after missing the last three games with a hand injury. He has played well against the Coyotes in his career, posting an 8-2-2 record with a 2.19 GAA and a .932 save percentage. For the Coyotes, backup Thomas Greiss will get the call.
Two Kids and a Goat: The new top line for the Wings features Daniel Alfredsson with Datsyuk and Zetterberg. Alfie has found the back of the net just once, but he leads the team in assists with eight. He recorded a three-assist game in Thursday's win.
The Replacements: With Kronwall out, Brendan Smith returns to the lineup. Danny DeKeyser will take Kronwall's spot next to Ericsson on the blue line. Mikael Samuelsson will replace Jordin Tootoo on the fourth line. The latter move could indicate a possible trade looming, as Ken Holland recently said that a trade could happen as early as Sunday.
DeKeyser Steps Up: Yours truly likes the decision to play DeKeyser with Ericsson, especially since the former had a strong game on Thursday. He will also likely quarterback the first power play unit.
Milestones: Hanzal will play in his 400th career game tonight for the Coyotes.
Prediction: Neither team has lost in regulation since they played each other. That will likely change tonight. The Wings made a lot of changes after losing to the Coyotes, and those changes will make a difference.
Make It: Red Wings 3, Coyotes 2
