Coyotes Update: The Coyotes managed to stay in Arizona in the offseason despite rumors that they would relocate. Since then, they have not gotten off to a good start as their last two losses came on the road in ugly fashion. The most recent of those was a 6-1 beatdown courtesy of the New York Islanders. Martin Hanzal scored the lone goal, while Mike Smith was yanked after he allowed five goals through 40 minutes of play. Radim Vrbata leads the scoring with four points (3 goals, 1 assist), but Shane Doan and Mike Ribeiro remain scoreless. The Coyotes will be without Rostislav Klesla (concussion), while Derek Morris (upper body) is questionable.
Red Wings Update: The Red Wings are also coming off of a loss; a 4-1 defeat by the Boston Bruins. Henrik Zetterberg scored the only goal , while Jimmy Howard stopped 33 shots. The offense and power play still remain an issue for the Wings, as Zetterberg's two goals have accounted for a third of the scoring. Patrick Eaves (knee), Darren Helm (groin), Jonas Gustavsson (groin), and Jordin Tootoo (shoulder) will all sit out tonight.
Centers: Ribiero was brought in to help spark the offense, but he still has yet to score with the Coyotes. Hanzal and Vermette are steady forces. Datsyuk has been a Coyote-killer in his career, as he has posted 57 points in his career against Phoenix. Weiss and Andersson have been solid two-way centers this season. Right now, the Coyotes don't have a center who is as offensively gifted as the Red Wings cneters.
Edge: Red Wings
Wingers: Doan always seems to be at his best (and sometimes his worst) against the Wings, as he has 35 points against them in his career. Vrbata has been steady in terms of scoring as well. Zetterberg has 17 goals against the Coyotes in his career, while Abdelkader could be one to mix it up with Doan. Alfredsson still has yet to score a point this season for the Wings. Franzen could have a good night as well, as he has seven points in his last six games against Phoenix. The third line for the Wings also needs to get going, and Cleary and Bertuzzi should be able to make an impact tonight.
Edge: Red Wings
Defensemen: Both Ekman-Larsson and Kronwall are not only considered Norris-worthy, but also candidates to play for Sweden at the 2014 Olympics. If Morris can't play, then David Runblad will likely replace him. Michalek is the only other Coyotes defenseman with a plus rating.
Special Teams: The Coyotes rank 19th on the power play and 25th on the penalty kill, yet they always seem to look better against the Wings. The power play for the Red Wings still hasn't scored, but keep in mind that it took until the fourth game of the season last year to do so. It could happen tonight against a bad Coyotes PK.
Goaltending: Smith has not fared well at the Joe in his time with the Coyotes, as he has posted an 0-2-1 record in three games. Howard has owned the Coyotes in his career, posting a record of 8-1-2 in 11 games, with the only loss coming on the road last season. Both goalies tied for the league lead in shutouts last season.
Edge: Red Wings
Prediction: The Coyotes have been a mess on the road, and things don't look better as they go to a place that has been a house of horrors. After some time off to follow the Detroit Tigers in baseball's postseason, the Wings should get back to winning tonight.
Make It: Red Wings 4, Coyotes 1
