Anyone who looked at the lineups for the Red Wings and Penguins before Wednesday night's game could probably assume the outcome wouldn't be pretty for the home team.
Facing a loaded Penguins roster, the Red Wings fell 5-1 in a preseason game Wednesday night.
The biggest issue for the Wings, who were missing several players either due to injury or a scheduled night off, was poor puck possession.
“You have to have the puck more than we did if you’re going to have any fun out there I’ll tell you that,” Wings coach Mike Babcock said. “They came in here with an NHL looking team and we didn’t have one. We still have to play so many games we have to spread out lineup out and we have so many guys hurt. We weren’t deep enough; we didn’t have the puck enough so that’s what I took from it.”
Chris Kunitz scored twice for the Penguins, who also got goals from Pascal Dupuis, Craig Adams, and Jussi Jokinen. Marc-Andre Fleury stopped 17 of 18 shots.
The lone highlight for the Wings was their only goal of the night at 12:49 of the second period. Drew Miller chased a loose puck and chipped it into the net after Fleury attempted to make a save similar to Dominik Hasek.
Petr Mrazek would stop 32 of 37 shots for the Wings.
Justin Abdelkader also injured his hand after fighting Rob Bortuzzo at 18:46 of the third. Both were ejected, but neither players are expected to be suspended.
