There have already been plenty of injuries among the Detroit Red Wings, and it's not even the start of the season.
The most serious of those might be to Patrick Eaves (knee/ankle) and Jonas Gustavsson (groin).
Eaves will be out 2-4 weeks with an MCL sprain suffered during practice last week, while Gustavsson will likely be out up to two weeks after injuring his groin in Saturday's 2-0 loss to the Boston Bruins.
With the latter sidelined, Petr Mrazek will start the season as the backup netminder to Jimmy Howard before getting assigned to the Grand Rapids Griffins.
As for Eaves, him being sidelined will keep him on the roster for now, as he will not count against the roster limit.
Meanwhile, Darren Helm (groin) has said that he is feeling better, but there is still no timetable for his return (how many times have we heard that before?). Johan Franzen (hip flexor) returned to action Saturday, while Jakub Kindl (hip flexor) and Daniel Alfredsson (groin) remain day-to-day.
