After a somewhat interesting saga that carried over to Twitter, free agent-winger Daniel Cleary decided to return to the Detroit Red Wings. Team GM Ken Holland said that the team and Cleary have agreed to a one-year deal worth $1.75 million.
"I'm back." Cleary said to the Detroit Free Press. "Signing deal tonight."
The 34-year old native of Newfoundland was on his way to Philadelphia to play for the Flyers after he had reportedly agreed to a three-year deal worth $8.25 million with them on Monday. But when Wednesday came, Cleary took a trip up to Red Wings training camp in Traverse City, Michigan to chat with Holland and head coach Mike Babcock.
"It's been a long process." Holland said. "I talked to Dan in July, just before free agency, and we couldn't find a solution. Ultimately, we made some decisions. I know Dan had some other opportunities this week, and he made the decision he wants to come to Detroit on a one-year deal.
"We talked about my managing style and the way our ownership runs our team, with loyalty."
The Wings now have 17 forwards under contract, which now means someone has to be moved. Gustav Nyquist is the only one who can still be sent down to Grand Rapids without going on waivers.
They are also $2.4 million over the salary cap, but they do not have to be compliant until September 30, which is the night before the start of the season.
The other dilemma is what number Cleary will wear, since his number 11 from last season has been taken by Daniel Alfredsson.
