NHL Free Agency doesn't officially begin until July 5, but a big fish just became available on the market.
The Tampa Bay Lightning exercised one of their compliance buyouts on Vincent Lecavalier earlier today, making him available for the other 29 teams to sign him.
Interestingly, when Lecavalier was asked about the Detroit Red Wings, he had this to say:
“It’s actually a team I grew up idolizing. Them and Montreal were my favorite teams. Ironically, Steve Yzerman was my favorite hockey player.”
If he were to sign with the Wings, he would fit in as a second-line center to replace Valtteri Filppula, who reportedly is on his way out the door. This which would allow Henrik Zetterberg and Pavel Datsyuk to play together more often.
