Former Marist head coach Jeff Bower was hired to be the new general manager of the Detroit Pistons. Bower, along with Stan Van Gundy will be making the important personnel decisions in Detroit for the foreseeable future.

It was clear since SVG had never been a team president before that he would be bringing in some help to run the show. That help comes in the form of Bower, who is fresh off coaching the Marist Red Foxes this past collegiate season. He was also an assistant coach for the Red Foxes from 1986-1985.

All of Bower’s NBA experience has come in New Orleans. Bower was the general manager for the Hornets from 2002-2003, and again from 2005-2010. His best decision in New Orleans came when he picked a young point guard out of Wake Forest named Chris Paul with the fourth overall selection in the 2005 NBA Draft. We all know how that one turned out. Bower also served as interim head coach for the Hornets in 2009, showing that he can do it all for a franchise. Bower has proven he can do just about any job a franchise has to offer, and now he will do his best to collaborate with the head man in charge, SVG, to re-tool the Pistons.

Even though Bower was hired as the new GM there is no doubt over who will have final say on personnel decisions. Van Gundy’s President Title ensures he will have the greatest hand in the Pistons future. Surely though the two will work hand in hand because Van Gundy hired Bower, and recognizes that his great basketball experience will be an asset to the team. Rumors before were linking SVG back to his old GM Otis Smith, and that reunion still may be in the works, but for now he has some help in the form of a new GM, Jeff Bower.
