By midday Thursday, there was internet scuttlebutt the Detroit Pistons were looking to move Josh Smith. Additionally, rumors persisted the team might want to add Luol Deng, Evan Turner, Harrison Barnes or others.

None of that happened, and the trade deadline passed with only the sound of crickets chirping, tumbleweeds blowing by or, in Michigan parlance, a quiet rain and snow mix falling from the February sky. The Pistons didn't make any moves Thursday, leading further to the belief that Joe Dumars is living on borrowed time.

The reality is, Dumars probably wasn't allowed to make moves by Tom Gores. He's becoming a bigger lame duck by the moment as the losses mount, and allowing a general manager who won't be on staff long term to make major decisions is probably not good business.

So, the rumors proved to be fools gold. As the saying goes, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Instead, the Pistons team previously seen by the fans is the Pistons team that will be received the rest of the year. That team is falling further out of the playoff hunt by the day, so the organization likely figured there was no use rocking the boat or giving Dumars freedom to put further imprints on the team, especially if he's not returning next year.

As February pushes to a close and March's stretch run begins, the Pistons will have to pull themselves out of their season-long slump without reinforcements or any changes, which now cannot happen until the offseason.
