The Detroit Lions interviewed former Tennessee Titans head coach Mike Munchak on Wednesday, continuing and building upon what figures to be a busy week with regards to interviews for potential head coaches.

ESPN reported that Munchak's interview, which originally was planned for Friday in Detroit, got moved up to Wednesday. In part, that was done in order to accommodate Ken Whisenhunt, who does not have much freedom to travel to interviews given his San Diego Chargers are still in the playoff picture and time is short as the team prepares to take on the Denver Broncos over the weekend.

Detroit figures to interview Whisenhunt before the end of this week in San Diego, perhaps on Thursday night according to Ed Werder of ESPN. Whisenhunt is still viewed as the top candidate on Detroit's list, and many would remain shocked if he doesn't eventually receive the Lions' job in the weeks ahead.

The Lions cannot officially hire Whisenhunt until after the Chargers are eliminated from the playoffs. Detroit interviewed Jim Caldwell last Friday, Gary Kubiak on Tuesday, and might still be interested in talking with Jay Gruden, who spoke with the Washington Redskins Wednesday and could be the top candidate there. Since it was announced the Lions were interested in talking with Gruden, nothing official has been reported about Gruden's possible scheduling of a Detroit interview or the Lions' interest in scheduling that interview.

At this point, it certainly appears as if Detroit's next head coach will come from the group of four former NFL head coaches, all of whom have received or will receive an interview with Lions' brass. This proves that head coaching experience has mattered from the start for the Lions, despite assertions that anyone, with or without head coaching experience, would be considered.
