Though Matthew Stafford was the one making all the throws, the national media is enthralled with Calvin Johnson's out of this world performance last Sunday. Thanks to that, Detroit Lions are a top ten team across the board in this week's power rankings.
The media members all seem particularly impressed with Johnson's latest bit of eye popping work, and even though the virtuoso performance had the feel of a one man show, the Lions seem to be a sneaky good team in the eyes of most. Here's week eight's recap.
ESPN:10th. Last Week: 11th. ESPN says the question about Calvin Johnson was answered, considering he outgained Dez Bryant and the Cowboys' offense on Sunday. That was good enough to move Detroit up a spot. Johnson also outclassed them, too, for what it's worth.
CBS Sports: 10th. Last Week: 11th. Pete Prisco keeps things hilariously perfect and simple this week by repeating Calvin Johnson's name four times. For good measure, he should have written it 329 times to match the amount of yards Johnson had.
Fox Sports: 10th. Last Week: 12th. Brian Billick, who got to watch Detroit's effort up close and personal, calls Calvin Johnson "a MAN" this week, while moving the Lions up two spots. Much like Prisco's simplistic analysis, that about covers things, as well.
Pro Football Talk: 10th. Last Week: 12th. Mike Florio has a good public service announcement for Lions' fans who still like to denounce Matt Millen. It was Millen who made the choice to draft Calvin Johnson, Florio reminds. Though it was a slam dunk choice, at this point, that's almost good enough to rinse away parts of an unfortunate legacy.
NFL.com: 10th. Last Week: 10th. Finally, some love for the quarterback! Elliot Harrison lauds Matthew Stafford for his fantastic performance against the Dallas Cowboys, and says that while the Lions wait for Nate Burleson's return, development of a 1-2 punch in the backfield along with a healthy Burleson will help Detroit keep pace with the Packers. It's true that Burleson can't come back fast enough, because 329 yard games are the exception and never the rule. With Johnson rewriting the book at wide receiver, though, one never knows.
Highest Rank: 10th.
Lowest Rank: 10th.
Their Overall Consensus: Calvin Johnson was a man possessed on Sunday, and Matthew Stafford also played a major role in a spectacular win. As Nate Burleson's health improves, that can only mean big things for Detroit's offense.
