Last week, a rally in the standings was called for by the human, and a rally in the standings exactly what that human proceeded to get. Though an 8-6 week of picking is relatively extraordinary for a dog, it pales in comparison to what a 9-5 week meant to the person in second place with his back against the wall and a pair of muddy paws firmly implanted on his neck.
Cooper didn't add to his lead last weekend, meaning a moral victory for your suddenly not so humble author. Izzy remained just off our pace with a sub .500 week. This week, the dogs predict the winners of all the big games, including the Detroit Lions trying to go 2-0 against the state of Ohio all by themselves.
Tampa Bay at Atlanta: The Buccaneers ship is falling fast and the same goes for the Falcons but that doesn't stop Izzy from picking against the prohibitive favorite. Cooper disagrees and goes with Atlanta. They've got problems, but the Buccaneers have more. C: Atlanta, I: Tampa Bay, M: Atlanta
Cincinnati at Detroit: This week, no time is wasted getting to the meat. Cooper takes the Bengals to win on the road and survive a tough part of their schedule, while Izzy, usually no stranger to betting against the Lions, takes Detroit to win at home. Izzy is right, but not by much. The Lions win a squeaker at home. C: Cincinnati, I: Detroit, M: Detroit
Buffalo at Miami: Another split pick as the Bills try to shake off a tough loss in an important AFC East battle. Cooper takes the Dolphins to win at home, while Izzy is going Bills to rebound off a tough home loss last weekend. It's close, but the Dolphins have too much. C: Miami, I: Buffalo, M: Miami
New England at New York Jets: The Patriots have found some of their old magic, while the Jets took a step backward in losing to the Steelers. Does that mean anything this week? Not to Izzy, who thinks Rex Ryan pulls the upset. Cooper goes with the Patriots. The last time these two met, the game was closer than it needed to be. The Jets get the win this time around. C: New England, I: New York Jets, M: New York Jets
Dallas at Philadelphia: A battle for first place in the ugly NFC East, Cooper likes the Cowboys. Izzy, meanwhile, remains a fan of the Eagles. Dallas has a bit more momentum, and should be able to pull out the road game as a result. That's been wrong in the past, though. C: Dallas, I: Philadelphia, M: Dallas
Chicago at Washington: The Bears try to remain in a first place tie in the NFC North by winning somewhere the Lions already won. Cooper doesn't think it happens, picking the Redskins to win. Izzy thinks the Bears are road warriors again. Washington is bad against the pass, meaning a big ay for Jay Cutler, Brandon Marshall and company. C: Washington, I: Chicago, M: Chicago
St. Louis at Carolina: A tough game to pick thanks to the relative anonymity of both teams. The dogs both think Carolina wins at home. With Cam Newton going good, that seems like the correct selection. C: Carolina, I: Carolina, M: Carolina
San Diego at Jacksonville: The Chargers win. All in favor including perennial Jaguar fan Izzy? Yes. C: San Diego, I: San Diego, M: San Diego
San Francisco at Tennessee: San Francisco goes on the road halfway across the country in in a tough cross-conference match up. Both dogs think that won't work out so well for the 49ers. They've proven tough under these circumstances before, though, and it happens again. C: Tennessee, I: Tennessee, M: San Francisco
Cleveland at Green Bay: What does Brandon Weeden get for a gift after tossing away last Sunday's game against the Lions? He gets to go to Lambeau Field and face the resurgent Packers, of course. Cooper thinks that's bad news, and he's right. Izzy stunningly picks against her Packers for seemingly the first time all season, predicting the Browns to win. C: Green Bay, I: Cleveland, M: Green Bay
Houston at Kansas City: If there's currently one NFL team with more mental and physical problems than Houston now, please provide some notice. Home games have turned into road games with fans despicably cheering their own players injuries. This week they go on the road and play better, but still lose. Cooper agrees, while Izzy thinks the Texans bounce back. C: Kansas City, I: Houston, M: Kansas City
Baltimore at Pittsburgh: The Steelers finally forced a turnover and won last week, and now the Ravens limp into town after losing a physical game to the Packers. Baltimore will be angry, and Pittsburgh, despite the win, still isn't good even though they'll be at home. Ravens win big. The dogs are split with Cooper taking the Steelers and Izzy believing in the Ravens. C: Pittsburgh, I: Baltimore, M: Baltimore
Denver at Indianapolis: The most delicious, highly anticipated game of the weekend sees Peyton Manning go home to Indianapolis to face the Colts. Cooper thinks Jim Irsay gets the last say, while Izzy predicts the Broncos to stay hot. Manning isn't going to lose after the firestorm made regarding Irsay's comments. Denver wins big. C: Indianapolis, I: Denver, M: Denver
Minnesota at New York Giants (Monday night): This game looked so much better on paper during the offseason, didn't it? Instead, each team limps in trying desperately to turn their season around. The Giants want their first win, and they'll get it thanks to the Vikings quarterbacking problems. The "C-Man" disagrees, taking Minnesota over the "G-Men," while Izzy believes the Giants find their first win. C: Minnesota, I: New York Giants, M: New York Giants
