In Fox's place, expect veteran tackle Corey Hilliard to start. Despite admitting this week that there's things he could improve upon and struggling with pass protection at times, Hilliard is still a very serviceable, ideal backup and did not allow a sack to the Minnesota Vikings when acting as a reserve.
Detroit rushed for 112 total yards on the ground as a whole, which was a much better rushing effort than any game in 2012. Identifying Hilliard, who entered the game in a reserve role, as anything other than a solid contributor seems to be splitting unnecessary hairs. Hilliard wasn't penalized, nor did he have many negative or disastrous plays.
A road environment like Arizona will definitely bring different challenges for Hilliard. He'll have to remain focused despite crowd noise and a charged up defense with plenty of play makers at linebacker with diverse skills. It's plenty to handle, but Hilliard does have the advantage of being a seasoned veteran, meaning the drop off from Fox could actually prove minimal. Though Jim Schwartz didn't admit as much this week, the fact that Hilliard was involved in such a contentious training camp battle with Fox is likely helping matters out.
Obviously, this particular setback is most disappointing for Fox, who hasn't been able to shake injuries since the Lions drafted him. Hopefully for him, though, this injury is only a minor setback and after some time to heal, Fox can continue his development into a player that looks like a very serviceable NFL tackle.
For at least this weekend, though, Fox will be forced to sit on the sidelines again watching Hilliard take on the Cardinals.
