Attempting to add more bodies to a competition to return punts and kickoffs for the Detroit Lions this fall, the team signed free agent wide receiver Micheal Spurlock, formally of the San Diego Chargers.

Spurlock adds yet another quality player at a position of immense need. Also included in the competition are Steven Miller and perhaps Mike Thomas and Reggie Bush. Detroit probably doesn't want to add extra wear and tear to either Thomas or Bush, however, making an experienced specialist like Spurlock incredibly valuable.

For his part, Spurlock has been successful in the role despite never finding a permanent home since he joined the league in 2006. He has returned multiple kickoffs for touchdowns, including the first ever such play in the regular season history of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers franchise in 2007.

Maybe, with Spurlock in the fold, Detroit will finally find some answers at their biggest position of need. After signing former Jaguar special teams wizard Montrell Owens and adding plenty of other new blood, the Lions stand to improve upon the dismal efforts of the past few seasons. Kickoff returns for scores and big gains have been big problems, while the Lions themselves haven't done nearly enough scoring or game changing when they get the ball on downs.

Nobody is pretending Spurlock or Miller will be channeling thoughts of Devin Hester, but considering where Detroit has been with characters such as Mike Furrey, Stefan Logan and others returning kicks, anything representing change stands to be a major improvement.

This offseason, the Lions have been committed to fixing things at several problem areas, but mostly special teams. That's all fans could have truly hoped to see.
