The Cowboys daring move up the 2012 NFL draft board to select standout LSU cornerback Morris Claiborne is the third draft in a row that the Joneses got their man. Call it the Randy Moss rule.
Owner, Jerry Jones, has said repeatedly that his biggest draft day regret was not selecting Moss in 1998, instead opting for Greg Ellis – lesson learned.
The addition of Claiborne completes the 2012 reconstruction of 2011’s leaky secondary. Free agent additions, Brandon Carr and Brodney Pool, will join the number the 6 pick and lone 2011 holdover Gerald Sensabaugh in the back four when the G-men host the ‘Boys to kick-off the season at MetLife Stadium on September 5.
With two, new, potential lockdown cornerbacks on the roster, Mike Jenkins is sudden trade bait; although, Cowboys.101 would love for #21 to be the nickel/dime CB. Instead, the front office is rumored to be shopping the former pro-bowler to make up for trading its 14th and 45th pick to move up to number six.
Additionally, Claiborne could help Dez Bryant’s production. Morris was a tremendous return man at LSU and could handle kick-off and punt return duties as a rookie. Dez got dinged on opening night against the Jets returning a punt and was limited for most of the year as a result. But, we’d rather see the Cowboys draft a return specialist than risk injury to either first round pick.
A player like Marquis Maze could fill the role and double up as a play making third wide receiver. Something Tony Romo would appreciate after losing WR Laurent Robinson to free-agency.
While the Cowboy’s draft got off to a great start Thursday night, it’s our view that the Cowboys still need the athletic BIG-man in the middle to collapse the pocket while D’Ware and Anthony Spencer pressure the edges.
Perhaps, Jerry can package Jenkins and a pick for corner needy team’s like the Colts, Panthers, Bills or Patriots for their 2nd round picks if Jerel Worthy is still on the board. If not, grabbing Wisconsin’s center Peter Konz would solidify the offensive line for years to come.
Round one’s surprise has Cowboys’ fans exited to see what Jones and Co. do next.
