Former Milwaukee Brewers closer John Axford will join the Cleveland Indians, according to MLB.com and ESPN’s Buster Olney.

Axford closed games for the Brewers from 2010 to 2012, saving 105 games. Last year, he lost his closer job and was traded to the St. Louis Cardinals.

Since the Tribe cut last year’s closer Chris Perez, Axford should take over the position in 2014. Bryan Shaw and Cody Allen will move up in the bullpen pecking order since set-up man Joe Smith signed as a free agent with the Los Angeles Angels.

Axford posted a 4.02 ERA last year between his stints in Milwaukee and St. Louis.

In other news, the Indians re-signed outfielder Matt Carson, who had the game winning hit in the Tribe’s 11-inning win over Houston on Sept. 19.

Carson and pitchers Tyler Cloyd and Travis Banwart signed minor-league contracts with invitations to spring training.

The Indians also completed their 40-man major-league roster by signing David Adams, a third baseman who hit .193 in 43 games with the New York Yankees. He can also play first and second base.
