A World Series game had never ended on an obstruction call until Game 3 between the St. Louis Cardinals and Boston Red Sox last night.
With the score tied 4-4 in the bottom of the ninth, the Cards’ Jon Jay hit a bouncer to second. Boston had the infield in with a runner on third, and Dustin Pedroia threw out Yadier Molina at the plate.
Then things got crazy. Boston catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia threw the ball past third baseman Will Middlebrooks in an attempt to catch Allen Craig going to third.
Craig tripped over Middlebrooks before trying to run home. Left fielder Daniel Nava threw the ball to the plate to get Craig out. However, third base umpire Jim Joyce called obstruction on Middlebrooks, awarding St. Louis the base, the run and the game.
The Cardinals poured out of the dugout to celebrate, while the Red Sox came out to argue.
As the crew of ESPN’s “Baseball Tonight” explained, the umpires made the right call. Whether Middlebrooks meant to trip Craig or not, a case of obstruction results in the runner being safe at the next base.
Cardinals reliever Trevor Rosenthal got the win, while Brandon Workman took the loss for Boston.
Game 4 is scheduled for 8:15 p.m. tonight. Clay Buchholz will start for Boston against the Cardinals’ Lance Lynn.
