Thanks to the free-spending ways of the San Francisco Giants, the Tribe’s second-half ace pitcher may be impossible to fit into the 2013 budget, according to writer Paul Hoynes.
“There is no chance that the Indians offer Jimenez a multi-year deal,” Hoynes wrote, citing the Giants re-signing Tim Lincecum to a two-year, $35 million contract extension.
Jimenez was 13-9 with a 3.30 ERA for the Tribe this season and carried the team to the playoffs after ace Justin Masterson was hurt.
Lincecum won the NL Cy Young Award in 2008 and 2009 but this year, he was 10-14 with a 4.37 ERA.
Due to their mutual options, the Tribe can offer Jimenez a one-year contract worth $14 million, but Jimenez can refuse it and seek even more money than Lincecum on the open market.
The Indians would get a first-round draft pick as compensation if that happens.
Of course, Jimenez may love Cleveland so much that he will take the one-year deal and stay with the Tribe. If that happens, Indians fans could enjoy two playoff seasons in a row.
