The Boston Red Sox took control of the 2013 World Series with an 8-1 win over the visiting St. Louis Cardinals in Game 1 last night.
Jon Lester shut down the St. Louis offense with 7.2 shutout innings. He walked one and struck out eight.
Meanwhile, Boston’s big hitters were on the job. David Ortiz and Mike Napoli drove in three runs apiece, including a two-run homer by Ortiz, who continues to build his Fenway Park legacy.
Napoli opened the scoring in the first inning with a three-run double.
St. Louis ace Adam Wainwright only lasted five innings. The Cardinals committed three errors, including two by shortstop Pete Kozma. Carlos Beltran left the game in the third inning with a rib injury.
Matt Holliday hit a solo home run in the ninth, allowing the Cardinals to avoid the shutout.
Game 2 will take place tonight at Fenway Park. John Lackey will start for Boston against Michael Wacha, who is 3-0 in the postseason for the Cardinals.
