Oakland beat Detroit 6-3 to take a 2-1 lead in the best-of-five AL Division Series. The A’s outslugged the Tigers, as home runs by Josh Reddick, Brandon Moss and Seth Smith supported the pitching of Jarrod Parker and three relievers.
Grant Balfour picked up the save after an angry verbal altercation with the Tigers’ Victor Martinez. Game 4 is today at 5:07 p.m. as Oakland sends Dan Straily to the hill to opposed the Tigers’ Doug Fister.
St. Louis beat Pittsburgh 2-1 to tie their series at two games apiece. Michael Wacha did not allow a Pirate to get a hit until the eighth inning.
Matt Holiday’s two-run homer helped Wacha to overcome Pittsburgh, whose only score came on Pedro Alvarez’ third home run of the series. Game 5 is set for Wednesday in St. Louis, which the Cards’ Adam Wainwright pitching against the Pirates’ Gerrit Cole.
Tampa Bay beat Boston 5-4, but the Rays trail 2-1 in the series. Jose Lobaton golfed a walk-off home run center field, as the Rays celebrated the fact that they are still alive.
Evan Longoria continued his heroics for the Rays, as his three-run homer in the fifth erased a 3-0 Boston lead. Game 4 is tonight at 8:37 p.m. Eastern, as Jake Peavy will start for the Red Sox against Tampa Bay’s Jeremy Hellickson.
The winner will face the Los Angeles Dodgers, who beat the Atlanta Braves 4-3 to win the series 3 games to 1. Carl Crawford slugged a pair of solo home runs to give the Dodgers a 2-0 lead after three innings.
Atlanta fought back to take a 3-2 lead, but Juan Uribe launched a dramatic two-run homer in the eighth to put the Dodgers on top after failing in two attempts to lay down a bunt.
Dodgers closer Kenley Jansen whiffed three Atlanta hitters in the ninth to send Los Angeles to the NL Championship Series for the first time since 2009.
