The Cleveland Indians’ season exceeded most pundits’ expectations, but it ended on Wednesday night with a 4-0 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays in the American League wild-card game.
The Indians collected nine hits but couldn’t translate them into runs off Alex Cobb and three relievers. Lonnie Chisenhall led the Tribe with three hits.
Danny Salazar pitched four innings for the Indians and gave up three hits. Cleveland pitchers struck out 11, but Tampa Bay came up with the big hit at the right time.
Delmon Young hit a solo homer to right field in the third inning. Desmond Jennings increased the lead to 3-0 with a two-run double in the fourth.
The Rays wrapped up the scoring in the ninth when Yuniel Escobar hit an RBI single to score an unearned run off Cody Allen.
An overflow crowd of 43,579 wore red and supported their team, but this was not the year for a long run of October baseball.
Cleveland improved from 68-94 last season to 92-70 with 10 straight regular season victories and the team’s first playoff berth since 2007. Terry Francona should be rewarded with the AL Manager of the Year award.
