The Tribe bombarded the Twins with 17 hits and built a 9-1 lead, seemingly to put away their eighth straight win to enjoy an evening of scoreboard watching.
However, Minnesota scored five more runs off Tribe starter Corey Kluber (11-5) to cut the lead to 9-6.
The Indians scored three more times to finish off the Twins, punctuated by a two-run homer by Drew Stubbs.
He became the 10th Indians player to reach double digits in home runs, including the departed Mark Reynolds.
Other offensive stars included Jason Kipnis and Asdrubal Cabrera with three hits each, and Mike Aviles and Ryan Raburn, who each drove in two runs.
As for scoreboard watching, the Tampa Bay Rays lost, so the Indians and Rays are now tied for the two wild-card spots with the Texas Rangers one game behind. If the season ends like this, the Rays would host the wild card game due to their 4-2 series win over the Tribe.
Justin Masterson pitched the eighth inning for the Tribe. He walked one and struck out three.
According to ESPN Stats and Information, the Indians’ 54-18 record against teams with losing records is the third-best in the wild-card era. This Tribe trails only the 1998 New York Yankees and the 1995 Cleveland Indians.
Cleveland will play Minnesota today at 1:05 p.m. Eastern. Scott Kazmir (9-9) will start for the Tribe.
