The Cleveland Indians said goodbye to their hometown fans for six days, but hopefully not six months as they beat the Chicago White Sox 7-2 on Wednesday night.
Cleveland holds the second wild-card spot: one game behind Tampa Bay and one game ahead of Texas. The Rays and Rangers also won last night, and all three teams are playing like the postseason has already started.
Danny Salazar (2-3) struck out eight White Sox batters in 5 1/3 innings. Justin Masterson pitched a scoreless ninth inning, returning from an oblique muscle injury.
The White Sox grabbed the early lead on a solo homer by Avilsail Garcia in the second inning. Cleveland scored twice in the bottom of the second on an error by Chicago third baseman Marcus Semien and an RBI single by Michael Brantley.
Nick Swisher gave the Tribe a 4-1 cushion with his team-leading 21st home run of the season to score Brantley.
Cleveland scored its last two runs on a sacrifice fly by Drew Stubbs in the sixth and a two-run single by Asdrubal Cabrera.
The fans finally came out for the last game of the season, as a crowd of 30,942 saw Cleveland finish a perfect six-game homestand to post a 51-30 record at Progressive Field.
After rolling up a 17-2 record against the White Sox, the Tribe will finish the schedule with a four-game series at Minnesota, starting tonight at 8:10. Zach McAllister (9-9) will start on the mound for Cleveland.
