Jason Giambi has earned his entire salary for the Cleveland Indians in two days. He saved the Tribe last night with a walk-off home run to beat the Chicago White Sox 5-4.
With the Indians trailing 4-3 in the bottom of the ninth, the 42-year-old pinch-hitter golfed a two-run homer into the right field bullpen and was mobbed by his overjoyed teammates at home plate.
Giambi also won the game with a dramatic homer on July 29, and his heroics may provide just the difference Cleveland needs to make the playoffs.
His 10th career walk-off home run also saved Chris Perez, who blew the Tribe’s 3-2 lead in the top of the ninth by coughing up home runs to Dayan Viciedo and Alejandro de Aza.
Another hero for the Tribe was Michael Brantley. He singled to score Asdrubal Cabrera in the second inning and tied the game with a solo homer in the seventh. Jason Kipnis singled to score Mike Aviles later in the inning to give Cleveland a 3-2 advantage.
Ubaldo Jimenez started for the Tribe and lasted 6 1/3 innings. He gave up five hits and two runs, walking three and striking out seven. Bryan Shaw (6-3) got the win in relief for the Tribe.
In the wild-card race, Texas and Tampa Bay both won. That means Tampa Bay and Cleveland still hold the cards. The Tribe is a game behind the Rays and a game ahead of the Rangers.
Cleveland has defeated the White Sox an astonishing 16 times in 18 games. The teams will face off one more time tonight at 7:05. Danny Salazar (1-3) will be on the hill for the Indians.
