Nobody told the Houston Astros they were supposed to roll over for the Cleveland Indians, so the Tribe had to battle for 11 innings last night in a 2-1 win at Progressive Field.
Matt Carson won the game for the Indians with a bases-loaded single to right field off Houston reliever Rhiner Cruz (0-2).
Jason Kipnis singled in Nick Swisher for Cleveland’s other run way back in the first inning off Dallas Kuechel. Swisher had four hits in the game.
Houston tied the game in the second off Ubaldo Jimenez on a sacrifice fly by L.J. Hoes.
Both Jimenez and Kuechel settled down and went seven innings without giving up any more runs. Jimenez struck out nine Astros hitters.
Chris Perez pitched the ninth for Cleveland. Houston loaded the bases, but Perez recorded his third strikeout of the inning to avoid disaster. Bryan Shaw (5-3) pitched the 11th and got the win for the Tribe.
Cleveland (83-70) drew only 12,607 fans leading into the final home weekend of the season. The Indians are just a half-game behind both wild-card teams, the Tampa Bay Rays and Texas Rangers.
Zach McAllister (8-9) will pitch for Cleveland tonight against the Astros at 7:05.
