The Cleveland Indians need to stop facing former Tribe pitchers down the stretch. Daisuke Matsuzaka held them in check a few days ago, and Jeremy Guthrie stopped them last night in a 6-3 win for the Kansas City Royals.
Guthrie wasn’t unhittable, as Indians banged out nine hits off him in six innings. Cleveland collected 12 hits in the game but grounded into three double plays.
However, Michael Brantley’s RBI single in the first inning was the only damage the Tribe could inflict on Guthrie.
The Royals tied the game in the fifth inning when shortstop Alcides Escobar launched his fourth homer of the year to deep left field.
Kansas City third baseman Mike Moustakas broke the tie in the sixth inning when he doubled in two runs off Tribe starter Zack McAllister (7-9).
The Royals increased the lead to 5-1 in the seventh before the Indians mounted a comeback. Michael Bourn doubled in the bottom of the seventh to score Yan Gomes and Jose Ramirez to cut the lead to 5-3.
However, Kansas City scored the only other run of the game when Escobar hit an RBI single off Chen-Chang Lee.
Detroit crushed the Chicago White Sox 9-1, so Cleveland is now 5.5 games behind the Tigers in the AL Central race. However, Tampa Bay lost 2-0 to Boston, so the Tribe is still only 1.5 games out of the final playoff spot.
The Tribe and Royals will settle their three-game series today at 12:05 p.m. at Progressive Field. Scott Kazmir (8-7) will pitch for Cleveland.
