The Cleveland Indians have had so much trouble beating Detroit that even the loss of the Tigers’ Triple Crown winner couldn’t help the Tribe avoid a 7-2 defeat on Friday night.
Miguel Cabrera left the game with an abdominal injury after the second inning, but his teammates took care of the Indians in a game that was called due to rain in the seventh inning.
Cabrera is batting .358 with 43 home runs and 130 RBI after leading all three categories in the American League last year.
Zach McAllister (7-8) had the first rough outing for a Cleveland starting pitcher in weeks, as he surrendered five runs in 3 2/3 innings.
Asdrubal Cabrera gave the Tribe a 1-0 lead in the second inning when he grounded into a double play to score Carlos Santana.
Detroit tied the game in the bottom of the second before erupting for four runs in the third inning. Victor Martinez delivered the big blow with a two-run double.
Asdrubal Cabrera cut Detroit’s lead to 5-2 by walking with the bases loaded. However, Indians reliever Rich Hill gave up two runs in the bottom of the seventh before the skies opened up.
Cleveland has lost four games in a row and trails Detroit by 7.5 in the AL Central Division. Scott Kazmir (7-6) will pitch for the Tribe tonight against Detroit’s Anibal Sanchez (11-7). Game time is 7:08 p.m.
