The Cleveland Indians played a very sloppy game against the Minnesota Twins on Sunday, but they still won 3-1. That’s what good teams do.
Scott Kazmir pitched six gutsy innings, striking out eight and getting out of one scary situation after another.
Cody Allen entered the game in the seventh and pulled another Houdini act. With runners on the corners and nobody out, he somehow emerged without a scratch.
Overall, the Twins left 13 runners on base, setting the stage for Drew Stubbs’ (pictured) home run, which almost made it into the center-field trees, to break a 1-1 tie. Nick Swisher added an insurance run with an RBI single to score Michael Bourn, who hustled his way to a double after Stubbs’ big hit.
Joe Smith (5-1) pitched the eighth, and Chris Perez finished up for his 21st save. Overall, Tribe pitchers struck out 12 Twins, keeping the “Strikeout Meter” lady on her toes.
Cleveland scored its first run on an RBI single in the third by Jason Kipnis. Minnesota tied the game in the fifth on a bunt single by third baseman Doug Bernier.
While the Twins’ problem was leaving men on base, the Indians’ committed four errors. They also make two other plays that left the fans scratching their heads.
First baseman Swisher slid into a bunt and knocked the ball into foul territory. Second basemen Kipnis decided not to toss the ball to shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera for a force out, but Kipnis just didn’t get to second base in time to get the runner out.
But they can laugh about these follies now, because the Tribe escaped the Twins series with two wins out of three.
As a giant line of kids merrily ran the bases after the game, the Indians knew they would have the day off today before heading to Atlanta and Detroit for a six-game road trip.
In the Hot Dog Derby, Mustard won a close race over Ketchup to take a 23-22 lead in the series. Onion (20 wins) chugged across the finish line in third place.
