Drew Stubbs hit a two-run home run in the top of the 14th inning to break a 1-1 tie. Later in the 14th inning, Michael Bourn scored an insurance run on a throwing error by Angels reliever Joe Blanton (2-14).
The game lasted five hours and 17 minutes.
The Angels took a 1-0 advantage as their leadoff hitter, left fielder, J.B. Shuck, greeted Tribe starter Danny Salazar with a home run in the first inning.
Salazar settled down after that, giving up just two more hits and two walks, while striking out seven in 5 1/3 innings.
Most importantly, Salazar kept pace with Angels starter C.J. Wilson, who was cruising along with a shutout until Carlos Santana tied the game with a solo home run in the eighth inning.
Tribe manager Terry Francona used his entire bullpen, finishing the game with winner Carlos Carrasco (1-4). That means Francona will count on a lot of innings tonight from ace Justin Masterson (13-9) as the Indians go for the sweep at 7:05.
Also, Detroit lost to Minnesota 6-3, so the Indians are 5.5 games behind the Tigers in the AL Central Division.
