Justin Masterson (13-9) pitched into the eighth inning, but he gave up a tie-breaking RBI double to A’s second baseman Eric Sogard in the seventh.
Oakland’s other runs off Masterson came in the first inning when Yoenis Cespedes hit a two-run homer, his 20th of the year.
Cleveland came back, as Nick Swisher scored in the third on a throwing error by right fielder Josh Reddick. Swisher (pictured from his days with Oakland) also hit an RBI single in the seventh inning to score Drew Stubbs.
Unfortunately for the Indians, they left 13 runners on base.
The Tribe is still only six games out of first place in the AL Central, as Detroit has lost two in a row. The Indians trail Oakland by 4.5 games for the second wild-card spot.
Cleveland will try to narrow that gap tonight at 9:05 Eastern as Ubaldo Jimenez (8-7) takes the mound at the O.co Coliseum.
