The Cleveland Indians did exactly what they needed to do in last nights 3-2 victory over Detroit. After blowing a 2-0 lead late in the game, Cleveland executed a squeeze bunt that brought in the winning run. Travis Hafner hit his second triple of the season in the bottom of the seventh inning. Hafner was then pinch run for by catcher Lou Marson, who scored on the squeeze bunt by Aaron Cunningham.
Cleveland acquired utility player Brent Lillibridge from the Boston Red Sox yesterday, which may mean Cunningham's days with the Tribe are numbered.
Another bright spot in last nights win for the Tribe was Ubaldo Jiminez, who has consistently pitched well against Detroit since he arrived in Cleveland last season. Jiminez did not receive the win last night, but did everything the team needed him to do in order to pull out a victory. Just when everyone in Cleveland digs Jiminez a grave, he crawls out with a quality start.
Aside from Jiminez dominating the Tigers since he joined the Indians, Cleveland is now 6-1 against the Tigers on the season. The lone loss this season came with Derek Lowe on the mound, and Lowe was roughed up early in his Detroit start. Lowe will take the mound tonight for the Indians and look to not only redeem his previous start against Detroit, but a string of recent consecutive poor starts.
Detroit will have Max Scherzer on the mound tonight, and he has found his groove recently. Scherzer struggled through the first few months, but has really come on lately as the effective pitcher he was last season.
