It was announced today that the Cleveland Cavaliers' Dion Waiters has been selected to play in the this year's BBVA Compass Rising Stars Challenge, which will be held during the NBA's All-Star weekend.
The Rising Stars Challenge began three seasons ago and replaced the NBA Rookie Sophomore game. The rules now allow for the rookies and second-year players to be mixed, making for a more evenly played game.
Waiters is one of 18 first and second-year players selected to compete, including Anthony Davis, Bradley Beal, Trey Burke, and Jared Sullinger. The players were selected by the NBA's assistant coaches.
Waiters was the number four pick in last year's draft and was named to the All-Rookie First Team after his first NBA season.
The Cavaliers' guard is averaging 14.3 points, 2.9 rebounds, and 2.7 assists in 40 games this season. He has accepted the sixth man role for Cleveland this season, coming off the bench in 31 of his games. He is second in the league in bench scoring and leads the Eastern Conference.
Waiters has scored in double figures in 23 appearances this campaign and has nine games of 20 or more points. His point average is good for fourth best in the league among second-year players.
Waiters was one of four Cavs players to compete in this event last season, scoring 23 points on 11-12 shooting for Team Shaq.
The game will be televised by TNT as part of their All-Star weekend coverage and will tip at 9 p.m. on February 14.
