The Cleveland Cavaliers announced yesterday that they have reached agreement with all three of their 2013 draft picks.
Anthony Bennett was the number-one overall pick in the draft after playing 35 games in his one season at UNLV. The 6-8, 240 pound forward averaged 16.1 points and 8.1 rebounds per game, while shooting 53.3% from the field. He won Mountain West Conference Freshman of the Year before electing to leave for the NBA.
Sergey Karasev was taken 19th overall by the Cavaliers. The sharpshooter played with Triumph Lyubertsy of the second division European league last season. There he scored 16.1 points per game, mostly from behind the three-point line. The 19-year-old Russian led his country to the Gold Medal in the World University Games, as well as winning silver at the U-18 Championships and bronze at the U-19 level.
Carrick Felix was taken in the second round with pick number 33. The 6-6 guard/forward combo finished his senior season at Arizona State averaging 14.6 points per game, 81 rebounds, and 1.6 assists. He was named second-team All Pac 12 and was on the Pac 12 All-Defensive team.
Per league and team policy, the terms of the contract were not released.
Cleveland has done well using the draft to build their team over the last few years. These young players will help to keep the trend going.
Bennett is expected to contribute right away, but many on draft night believed that Karasev would be stashed in Europe for a year or two before coming to the NBA. The Cavaliers quickly said they wanted Karasev as a member of their team this season and signing him to a contract shows that commitment.
It will be interesting to see how much time Felix sees with Cleveland this year, as he did enough to earn a contract but could spend time in the D-League throughout the season.
